McNeil Canyon Road Project - Ground Breaking Ceremony
On October 8, 2007, Douglas County Transportation and Land Services celebrated the beginning of construction on the McNeil Canyon Road Project with a ground breaking ceremony. The ceremony commemorated the beginning of a two-season reconstruction of 5.45 miles, MP 1.98 to MP 7.43. This project is scheduled for 160 working days and is designed to improve roadway width to 30 feet with 11 foot driving lanes and 4 foot shoulders. Roadway alignment, structure and safety will be improved at the completion of this project.

The project starts at Milepost 1.87, near the old Tunnel Hill Granite pit site, and progress up the hill to Milepost 7.50 at the top of the grade.  The horizontal and vertical alignments will be improved to lengthen sight distance for enhanced safety.  This realignment will result in a reduction of grade from an existing maximum of nearly 15% to a maximum not over 12%.  Numerous sharp curves will be flattened and the hairpin curve near the top of the grade will be eliminated.  The roadway will be widened, with turnouts and climbing lanes in selected areas.  New guardrail will be installed and storm drainage facilities will be updated to required standards.

By clicking on a section of the alignment overview shown below, you will be taken to a larger image showing the final design in that area. Also take a look at images of the difference between the current road and the proposed road.
